| A fourth-round draft pick in 1992 (88th overall) by the Minnesota North Stars (now Dallas), Jere played his first NHL season in 1995-96. In 1997-98, he won the Frank Selke trophy as the league's top defensive forward and reached NHL career-highs in goals with 23, game-winning goals with six and power-play goals with seven. In 1998-99, he scored 20 goals and 32 assists in 74 games. In the Spring of 1999 he won his first Stanley Cup. Before leaving his native Finland to play in the NHL, Jere spent three seasons with Espoo of the Finnish Division I league and two seasons with TPS of the Finnish League. JJere was a member of the 1989 Finnish team that won the World Challenge Under-17 Championships. In 1993, he played for Finland at both the World Championships and the World Junior Championships. In 1995, he helped Finland take the gold medal at the World Championships and in 1996 he made to the trip with Team Finland to the World Cup of Hockey. Jere has had two opportunities to represent his country at the Olympics: 1994 in Norway and again in 1998, this time in Japan, where his team took home the bronze. Jere lists fishing as a favorite spare-time activity. |
